Personal Role: I investigated the use of bamboo as a medium for controlling airflow, and regulating thermal loads from sunlight on the building's design, and helped program the layout of the housing units. | Scripted the bamboo screen's behavior. | Learned the local cinder block, and masonry brick building techniques, and employed them when the construction took place in Ghana. | Produced the rendering imagery, and bamboo screen diagrams.
Medium: Sketch Up | Rhinoceros | Grasshopper | Photoshop | VRay | Illustrator | Site Construction
Main Challenges: 1. Collaborating, with people from different cultures, although enriching, can be a challenge sometimes. | 2. Ensuring maximum rigidity on the bamboo arches. | 3. Figure out a way to standard mass produce the bamboo arches.
Unraveling: 1.  Establishing right away the common goal, compromise, and always give the best of one is crucial for multi-cultural team building. | 2. Four bamboo rods per column held together by separators. Each joint is fastened with nylon rope, and bolted with threaded rods for sturdiness. | 3. A template composed of several freestanding "bridges" laid out the arch's footprint in which the bamboo would rest while being fastened/joined together.

Just above six degrees from the equator, the Republic of Ghana enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year without a significant climate variations. Perched in Western Africa, this nation boasts a rich multicultural history where many ethnic groups converge together. At around 13 kilometers east of Lake Volta, lies the village of Have Etoe. The necessity of more housing for the village’s maternity clinic calls for a design that considers the working midwives and their families.
